After ensuring public health & food safety, Alipurduar district administration is all set to make Alipurduar District a Tobacco-Free District..!!
Tobacco is the single largest cause of all preventable deaths globally & in India. With more than 7,000 chemical compounds, many of which are toxic as well as carcinogenic, tobacco is known to cause over 25 diseases. Despite its well-known health hazards, the use of tobacco continues to increase on a daily basis.
Today, a Meeting was conducted at district Dooars Kanya with the objective of drawing out an action plan for implementation of COTPA Act in the District and to prepare a roadmap for making the District Tobacco Free by December 2018.
With an effort to lead by example, Doars Kanya Collectorate, SP Office & CMOH Office will be declared Tobacco Free on September 4th. From this day, use of tobacco products like Cigarette, Ghutka etc will be banned and anyone (officer or public) found using the same within the compound of these buildings will be fined.
Other Government Offices will be made Tobacco Free by the end of September. Selling of Tobacco products such as Gutkha, cigarettes etc. near schools and colleges will be regulated. Banners will be put up for public awareness. Special Enforcement Squad is being setup specifically for making district Tobacco Free.
Earlier, the District Administration under DM Nikhil Nirmal conducted raids on 1st of August 2018, in atleast 10 Hotels & Sweet Shops. Only one had FSSAI Licence. Taking a humanitarian approach, Shops were not sealed for not having FSSAI License.
However, few hotels were sealed owing to unhygienic kitchen, rotten sweets & rats found in Kitchen which may create a safety and security risk to whole of Alipurduar.
Some sweet shops were also sealed with an instruction not to produce further until hygiene is maintained as rotten sweets (some with fungus) were found from there. DM, Deputy CMOH, Assistant Magistrate, Food Safety Officer & OC JM conducted surprise raid on hotels and sweet shops within alipurduar municipality area.
7 Hotels & 3 Sweet Shops visited.
After such raid and strict actions, many other shops took a great lesson and now following hygienic food safety measures and rebuilding kitchen, wearing gloves, hair caps and aprons.
We have a strong belief that our pro-active administration with help of local public will surely get the goal and will set another great example.
“Let’s all make a pledge to make our Alipurduar district Tobacco Free by December 2018”
