Jalpaiguri, 28th January : A 20-year-old college student died while taking selfie on Railway Bridge over Ghis river. The accident occurred in Odlabari under Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on 26th January 2020 afternoon.
According to the Railway police sources, the deceased student’s name was Ruma Roy (20), a third year student of Maynaguri College. Another third-year student accompanying the deceased, Jayashree Roy (20), jumped off the railway bridge to avoid being hit by train. She was rushed to Mal Super Specialty Hospital in critical condition. Her condition is reported to be stable now.
It was reported that some teachers along with a group of 150 students from a coaching center in Maynaguri were for a picnic on the banks of Ghis river, Odlabari. Biplob Chandra (teacher) said that, splitting from the group, two students Ruma and Jayashree climbed onto the railway bridge and were busy clicking selfies when a passenger train from Siliguri bound to Alipurduar hit one of them. The impact was so terrible that she fell from the bridge into the river and died on the spot.
A group of railway police from New Mal Junction arrived at the spot and recovered the body. The body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy and the whole matter will be investigated, railway police said.
