Siliguri, 29th Feb: Central government may initiate the project of alternative bridge to Sevoke coronation bridge. The Coronation bridge popularly known as ‘Baghpul’ spanning over teesta river is the door to development for the people of Dooars.
On Thursday 27th feb, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista met with Union Minister for Highway and Surface transport Nitin Gadhkari to bring to his attention the urgent need to construct an alternative bridge of Coronation Bridge.
During the meeting, Bista highlighted that people are forced to use the age old bridge to travel between Darjeeling and Dooars. The bridge was built back in 1937 and currently it is in very fragile state.
Bista said, “The alternative bridge will make traffic movement smooth and preserve the existing bridge known for its architectural grandeur”
He requested than an alternative bridge be built between Sevoke and Ellenbari for the benefit of the people living in the districts of Darjeeling, Alipurduars, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and neighbouring state of Sikkim.
Further, “the Hon’ble Union Minister has personally spoken to the concerned official and have instructed the department to initiate the work at the earliest,” said Bista.

The Sevoke Coronation bridge popularly known as ‘Baghpul’ is the door of development to Dooars. The bridge also connects districts of Alipurduar & Cooch Behar, Dooars, and Bhutan with North Bengal’s second metropolis Siliguri, Darjeeling district and state of Sikkim. The people of Dooars is entirely dependent upon it as this bridge is responsible for the social and economical development of the region. The demand to construct an alternative bridge has been raised since decade and the Dooars Forum for Social Reforms has taken the matter to the highest level.
Moreover, the area being in a seismic zone and the condition of the bridge is deteriorating, there is an urgent need for immediate construction of a new bridge. The 83 year old Coronation bridge had developed cracks following devastating 2011 earthquake.
It may also be recalled, a similar bridge named Anderson Bridge spanning on Teesta river at Teesta bazar and was washed away in the catastrophic incident of flash-flood of 1968. The twin bridge of Anderson Bridge, Coronation Bridge sustained the flash-flood of 1968.
The people demands replacement of this age old bridge made by Britishers as the bridge is technically unfit to be used.
