Siliguri: A policeman was killed when a lorry hit him while on duty. The deceased has been identified as Rajat Sarkar. He was a sub-inspector of the New Jalpaiguri Police Station in the Ambari Checkpost area under Siliguri Metropolitan Police.
According to police with the help of CCTV footage, it was revealed that another vehicle crashed into Rajat Sarkar’s motorcycle while he was on the way from Siliguri to Ambari. After the incident, Sarkar was seen lying on the road in a critical condition for a long time. Sarkar died due to excessive loss of blood. On receiving the news, a police van at the NJP police station reached the spot and rescued him. They immediately took him to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for treatment where doctors declared him dead.
The police officer was a resident of Falakata and was staying in the quarters at the police line in Siliguri. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. Other family members includes widowed mother and a brother. His brother also works in police. There is an atmosphere of deep mourning in the family and police.
The body of the deceased SI was brought to the Siliguri Police Commissionerate after the autopsy. The police commissioner and other police officers paid homage to him. Family members of the deceased SI were also present there. His body will be taken to the Kiranchandra crematorium.
