Jalpaiguri: Acting on the basis of secret information, Nagrakata police on Saturday night intercepted an SUV heading towards Siliguri from Assam and seized 8.3 kgs illegal gold biscuits.
The estimated market value of the seized gold is approx. four and a half crores (4.5 crore).
Three gold smugglers namely Santosh Gajape of Mumbai, Krishna Majumdar and Mantosh Biswas of Assam, have been arrested in this connection.
Dhendup Sherpa, the additional superintendent of police (rural) of Jalpaiguri said in a press conference on Sunday, “Nagrakata police station OC Sanju Burman got the information of the illegal gold being smuggled by road from Assam via Dooars to Siliguri.
Officer Burman with his men immediately carried out naka checking at Batabadi more NH31 located near Nagarakata. On Saturday night, they stopped an SUV which was coming from Assam. On searching tge vehicle, the police team found the concealed gold bars and detained 3 smugglers with 50 gold biscuits.”
“We have sent them to the court on Sunday. We will file a petition to seek 14-days police remand. They need to be interrogated on their links whether they are only carriers or members of a gold smuggling racket” said D. Sherpa.
This is one of the biggest success of Nagarakata police. Earlier, illegal cannabis and liquor has been seized twice. After this great success, a press conference was held in the Mall Mahukama Police Officer’s office on Sunday morning. During the press conference, Additional SP, Malbazar Mahukma Police Officer Devashish Chakraborty, Nagarkata Police Station Incharge Sanju Varman and others were present.
