DYFI rally turns violent in Siliguri, 3 police and several activists injured

Siliguri, 13th February: Siliguri turned into a battleground after CPIM’s youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) members and Police clashed on Wednesday. Watch Video

DYFI had organized a march towards Uttarkanya, the branch secretariat of North Bengal, against CAA-NRC-NPR and state government’s alleged discrimination against Left-run Siliguri Municipal Corporation and Siliguri Mahukuma Parishad. The DYFI members also demanded jobs for unemployed youths, reopening of the closed tea gardens and better price for the crops for farmers.

The rally was led by DYFI state president Meenakshi Mukherjee, state secretary Shyandeep Mitra and Darjeeling district DYFI secretary Sourashis Roy.

The clash erupted after DYFI members carrying rally from Air view More was stopped by police at Tinbatti More, 1km from Uttarkanya. The agitators broke the police barricades and tried to march towards Uttarkanya. Police used force to disperse the crowd and were pelted by stones.

Siliguri police commissioner Tripurai Atharv said, “No permission was taken for the rally.” The members tried to cross the barricades through forceful entry. There were around 800 members in the rally and despite several requests they broke the first barricade and then tried to break the second barricade.

During a press briefing he said, “We had to use water cannon to disperse the crowd as the rallyists pelted stones on police. Three policemen sustained when stones were pelted on them from the crowd.”
Meanwhile DYFI members have alleged that police first used water cannon, lobbed tear gas shells and charged batons without provocation.

Siliguri Mayor and veteran CPIM leader said, “Police actions in not justifiable, several of our members are injured when police attack on them. I strongly condemn the police action as they were well prepared for the entire episode.”
