Siliguri: A 67-year-old man was killed after being hit by an army truck while crossing the road. The accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Gurung busty area in Siliguri. The deceased has been identified as Bhagat Shankar Prasad (67), a resident of Ramganj Hatkhola in North Dinajpur district.
According to the local sources, the man was hit by an army truck while he was crossing the road at the Gurung Basti more on Hillcart Road in Siliguri on Tuesday morning. Locals complained that despite of having repeated accidents at the Gurung busty more area, there have been no policemen at the traffic points. Due to which road accidents have increased in the area.
After the incident, the agitated crowd vandalized the army vehicle and blocked the road creating huge traffic jam on Hillcart Road. Upon receiving the news of the accident, a large police force of Pradhannagar police station reached the spot brought the situation under control. However, when the mob tried to thrash the driver of the vehicle, the police rescued him and took him away.
On the other hand, after the accident, the locals took Bhagat Shankar Prasad to Siliguri District Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Recently, Uttam Sengupta, a teacher by profession and a resident of Deshbandhupara, died in a road accident at the same place. The locals claimed that if the policemen are not deployed at these traffic points, many more people may lose their life in accidents in future.
