First COVID-19 positive woman from Kalimpong dies at NBMC&H

The first COVID-19 positive patient in North Bengal died on Sunday night at North bengal medical college and hospital on Monday.

Siliguri: The first COVID-19 positive patient in North Bengal’s Siliguri reported dead on Sunday night. The North bengal medical college & hospital (NBMC&H) on Monday confirmed. The deceased Sunita Devi Singh (45) of Oden Road, kalimpong was admitted at NBMC&H isolation ward on 26.03.2020.

The 45-year-old Sunita Devi Singh was a resident of Oden Road kalimpong under Darjeeling district in North bengal. She returned from Chennai to Badogora by flight and went to a relative’s house in Siliguri. She came to Siliguri twice due to medical reasons. Test in the city’s private lab as well. The woman was being treated at North bengal Medical’s Respiratory Intensive Care Unit. The woman’s family member, including a relative’s family member, was sent to a home quarantine.

According to family sources, the women’s daughter lives in Chennai for studies. She traveled to Chennai on 7th March for her daughter’s treatment and on 19th March she along with her daughter returned to Bagdogra from Chennai by flight (Spice Jet, Chennai MAA to Badogora IXB, 1A SG 327, 08:30 hrs) and by their own car they came to their relative’s house at Bhakti nagar. They stayed there for half an hour and left for kalimpong. On 20th March, she was suffering fever and dry cough and visits local doctor in kalimpong but did not recover inspite taking medicines. On 26th March, she along her husband came again to their relatives house in Siliguri and from there they went in a private diagnostic center for CT scan and X-ray. But after getting seriously ill, she was later admitted to NBMC&H on the same day. Due to the suspicion of Corona virus infection, the medical doctors sent her samples to National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Beleghata, Kolkata for examination. From there the report came positive on Saturday evening.

The Health Department is looking for those who came in contact with the infected patient as she went to multiple places before being admitted to the hospital. Panic has spread in entire region since the news of the woman being infected with the corona virus has surfaced. The physician of Kalimpong is in the home quarantine. The drugstore is also closed since that day. District Administration and Health Department officials in Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri are closely monitoring the whole matter.
