Illegal timber worth 1.7 lakhs seized from Birpara

Birpara, June 3: Eight logs of Segun (Teak wood timber) were recovered from a small goods carrier bearing vechile registration number WB-73E-2325 on Tuesday evening near Pagli river under Birpara PS in Alipurduar district of West Bengal.

The current market value of the recovered timber is approximately One lakh Seventy thousand rupees (₹1,70,000/-) as the ranger of Dalgaon Mr Dorjey Sherpa said.

The teak tree logs were recovered while the forest guards of Dalgaon forest range were on patroling on Tuesday evening. A vechile loaded with timber was seized but no smuggler was caught.

Earlier, forest officials of Dalgaon Range had confiscated several small vehicles without number plates while smuggling timber from the area through Birpara. One can easily see the deforested area of Dalmore forest near Birpara-Makrapara Road.
