International drug racket busted in Birpara, 1 arrested with huge quantity of illegal drugs

International drug racket busted in Birpara. One person arrested with huge quantity of illegal drugs

Birpara: Working on source information, Birpara Police arrested a garage owner from Birpara Chowpati area with a huge quantity of drugs (sedative tablets and cough syrups) worth lakhs of rupees and a car.

Jaigaon Additional Superintendent of Police Kuntal Bandopadhyay said, “his team led by Birpara Police Station in-charge Palzer Bhutia has been conducting a campaign against illegal trade of drugs and has managed to arrest a man with large number of illegal drugs being smuggled in the international market. On Sunday morning, the owner of a garage in Birpara named Md. Ajit Khan (44), S/o Lt Md. Majit Khan of Birpara Falakata Road , PS- Birpara, Dist – Alipurduar was arrested along with 34,000 sedative tablets, 928 bottles of cough syrup and an SUV.

Additional SP Kuntal Bandopadhyay said, “It is part of an international cycle”. According to police sources, the drug lords had stocked huge quantity of drug for sale in different areas including Birpara. A case has been initiated against him under NDPS Act and the accused will be forwarded before Alipurduar sub-divisional court on Monday and brought under remand. Birpara Police Station OC Paljar Bhutia said similar operations would be carried out continuously.

It should be noted that Birpara and adjoining areas neighboring to Bhutan has become a hub for illegal drugs, illegal arms, timber smugglers and various smugglers. Drugs like sedative tablets and cough syrups are being illegally traded in different areas of Madarihat Birpara block. Police in Madarihat and Birpara police stations have caught smugglers with drugs several times before.
