Two drug smugglers arrested from Birpara


Birpara, 24th June: Working on source information, Birpara PS team apprehended two youths with large quantity of narcotic drugs, cough syrup and sedative tablets from Birpara under Alipurduar district of West Bengal.

The arrested persons namely Bakar Ali (38), S/o Azizar Rahaman is a resident of Sishubari, Chapaguri and Biki Tamang (32), S/o Gopal Tamang is a resident of Birpara Collegepara, New Line.

According to a Birpara Police Station source, the duo were arrested while smuggling highly illicit drugs plying on a shared E-rickshaw. Atleast 7680 sedative tablets and 190 bottles of cough syrup were recovered from their possession that was kept under the seat of Toto (E-rickshaw) in a Naka checking at Sales-Tax area in Birpara Lanka road.

The composition of the cough syrup and the tabs were found containing substances that come under the purview of NDPS Act and which needed proper documentation for storing/sale.

Birpara Police Station OC Palzar Bhutia said, “A case under proper section of NDPS Act has been initiated against them. Accused Biki Tamang and Baker Ali will be forwarded before Ld court Jalpaiguri and brought under police remand to workout the actual origin of procurement and the persons associated with the smuggling of the drugs”. He further added, “similar campaigns would be carried out continuously against illegal drug smugglers.”

It must be noted that Birpara and adjoining areas neighboring to Bhutan has become a hub for illegal drugs, illegal arms, timber smugglers and various other illegal activities.
