Alipurduar: The forest department foiled an attempt to smuggle timber in Birpara area under Alipurduar district. On Thursday night, Dalgaon Range officials of the Jalpaiguri Division Forest Department raided and seized two vehicles with 60 CFTs teak wood. Two deputy rangers, Pritam Roy and Prakash Thapa, led two separate operations on that day.
Dorji Sherpa, ranger DFR, said, “Illegal timber worth about two lakh rupees (₹2,00,00/-) has been seized in the two separate operations. Two vehicles were also seized. None had a number plate. However, it was not possible to catch those involved in the smuggling.”
According to Dalgaon Range sources, a mini freight vehicle (Tata ace) without number plate was heading towards Madarihat on Asian Highway No. 48 at 8.30 pm that night. The vehicle was stopped near Himalaya Hotel. A search was conducted and about 25 CFTs of teak wood was recovered from the vehicle.
Meanwhile, another vehicle (Maruti Van) without a number plate was seized at Pagli River, near Budhbaray bazar, Dalmore Tea Garden at around 9pm on the same day. The vehicle was found loaded with five illegal teak logs which was about 35 CFTs of timber.
